Things to Do in Ao Nang, Krabi

Happy Hotel Travel Guide · Updated August 2026

Ao Nang is the easiest base for exploring Krabi's coastline — a working beach town with a long promenade, an easy walk to boat piers, and quick access to some of southern Thailand's most photographed scenery. Here's what to actually do once you're here.

Ao Nang Beach and the Viewpoints

Ao Nang Beach itself is a long stretch of sand backed by restaurants, dive shops, and longtail boats lined up waiting for the tide. It's less about lying on the sand here and more about being the launch point for everything else — but the beach walk at sunset, with limestone karsts silhouetted offshore, is worth doing on its own. For a wider view, the short hike or motorbike ride up to the Ao Nang viewpoint gives you a look back over the whole bay and out toward Poda and Chicken Island.

Day Trips to the Islands

Longtail and speedboat trips leave from Ao Nang's main pier every morning for the nearby islands — Poda Island, Chicken Island, and Tup Island are close enough for a half-day "4 Islands" tour, while Phi Phi and Bamboo Island are a longer full-day trip further out. Most tour operators along the beach road sell seats directly; prices and boat type (longtail vs. speedboat) vary, so it's worth comparing a couple of stalls before booking.

Railay Beach and Rock Climbing

Railay is a short longtail ride from Ao Nang's pier — there's no road in, which is exactly why it's stayed so scenic. Beyond the beach itself, Railay is one of the best-known rock climbing spots in Asia, with routes for complete beginners through to experienced climbers, plus the short but sweaty hike up to the Railay viewpoint and the Phra Nang Cave shrine at the far end of the beach. It's an easy half-day trip and a natural pairing with a morning at Ao Nang. Read our full guide to getting to Railay Beach →

Ao Nang Night Market and Dining

In the evening, the night market along the main road fills with food stalls, grilled seafood, and the usual souvenir stands — a good, low-key way to eat well without booking a restaurant. Ao Nang also has a wide spread of Thai and international restaurants along the beach road for something more sit-down.

Thai Massage and Wellness

Traditional Thai massage shops line the streets around Ao Nang, and it's one of the easiest places in Krabi to end a long day out. If you'd rather not go far, ask at the front desk — Happy Hotel has its own massage and sauna facilities on-site, so a day of boats and climbing can end without leaving the building.

Best Time to Visit

The dry season, roughly November through April, has the calmest seas and the most reliable island-hopping weather — this is peak season, so book boats and rooms a little ahead. The rainy season (May–October) is quieter and cheaper, with short afternoon downpours rather than all-day rain, and is still a perfectly workable time to visit if you don't mind some flexibility with boat trips.
