Ao Nang is warm all year round, so there's no truly bad time to come — but the season you choose shapes the trip. The dry months bring calm seas and the most reliable island days; the green season brings rain, quieter beaches and a landscape at its most lush. Here's how the year breaks down, and how to pick the right time for you.
Krabi's Two Seasons at a Glance
Like the rest of Thailand's Andaman coast, Krabi has two main seasons, set by the monsoon winds:
- Dry season — roughly November to April. Mostly sunny days, calmer seas and the clearest water. December to February is the busiest stretch of the year, and March and April are the hottest months.
- Green (rainy) season — roughly May to October. More rain and stronger winds on the coast, rougher seas on some days, fewer visitors and the greenest scenery of the year.
The change between the two doesn't happen on a fixed date — some years the rain arrives early or lingers — so treat these months as a guide rather than a guarantee.
The Dry Season: November to April
This is the classic time to visit Ao Nang. The sea on the Andaman side is usually at its calmest, which means smoother boat rides, better visibility for snorkelling and the most dependable conditions for full-day trips further out, such as the Phi Phi Islands. It's also the most reliable time for watching the sun go down over the sea from Ao Nang Beach.
Peak season
Christmas, New Year and the weeks around them are the busiest time in Ao Nang. Rooms, boat seats and popular tours fill up early, so book your stay and any must-do trips well ahead. Chinese New Year, which falls in January or February, is another busy period.
The hot months
By March and April the heat builds, and the middle of the day can be intense. Plan beach time and boat trips for the morning or late afternoon, drink plenty of water, and save the hottest hours for a long lunch or a swim in the hotel's outdoor pool. Mid-April also brings Songkran, the Thai New Year, celebrated with water fights in the streets — great fun if you don't mind getting soaked.
The Green Season: May to October
The southwest monsoon brings the rain to Krabi from around May. That rarely means weeks of non-stop downpours: many green-season days mix sunshine with heavy showers that come and go. There are also grey, wet days, and spells when the wind picks up and the sea turns rough, and the amount of rain varies a lot from one year to the next.
Sea conditions and island tours
The sea is the biggest difference. On calm days, island tours and speedboat transfers run as normal. When the wind and waves are up, the operator may change the itinerary, swap a stop or postpone a trip for safety — that decision is made on the day. Our island tours note that the itinerary can change with weather and sea conditions, and speedboat times can shift with tide and weather too.
Some national park sites also close for part of the low season. In recent years Maya Bay in the Phi Phi Islands has closed for a period to let the bay recover. Rules and dates change, so if a particular stop matters to you, ask at the front desk or check before you book.
Making the most of it
- Build in spare days. Put island trips early in your stay, so a day lost to weather can be moved rather than missed.
- Start early. On many days the heaviest showers arrive later on, so a morning outing often gets the best of the weather.
- Have a rainy-day plan. Inland Krabi is ideal for unsettled weather — the Tiger Cave Temple near Krabi Town, the Emerald Pool and hot springs at Khlong Thom, and waterfalls that run fuller after rain.
- Or stay in. A wet afternoon is what the hotel's sauna and Thai massage are for. The common area has a pool table plus card and board games, and you can order food to your room until 2:00 PM. See our facilities and dining pages.
Why the Green Season Can Still Be a Good Choice
For plenty of travellers, the quieter months make the better trip. Beaches, viewpoints and restaurants are far less crowded, it's easier to find space on tours, and the limestone cliffs and hills around Ao Nang turn a deep, vivid green. If you're flexible and happy to swap a boat day for a massage now and then, the green season is a relaxed time to see Krabi.
What to Pack
Whatever the month, pack for heat, sun and water:
- Light, breathable clothes and swimwear — it's warm all year.
- Sun protection: a high-factor sunscreen, a hat and sunglasses. Reef-friendly sunscreen is a good choice for snorkelling trips.
- A small dry bag for boat days, and sandals or water shoes — at low tide you may need to wade to and from a longtail boat.
- Something that covers your shoulders and knees for visiting temples.
- Insect repellent, especially for evenings and inland trips.
- Motion-sickness tablets for speedboat trips, if you're prone to seasickness.
For the green season, add a light rain jacket or poncho, quick-drying clothes and a waterproof pouch for your phone.
So, When Should You Go?
If calm seas and island-hopping are the main reason for your trip, aim for the dry season, roughly November to April, and book early if you're coming over Christmas, New Year or Chinese New Year. If you'd rather have quieter beaches and don't mind a few showers, the green season from May to October is well worth considering.
